A mod which allows fast travel only after a road connecting the destinations has been made, incentivizing players to build and see the world.

Via Romana is Rasa Novum's solution to the problem of fast travel in Minecraft. In order to fast travel using Via Romana, you must build a path and traverse it before you can teleport across it. Instead of skipping past the world, this sort of fast travel incentivizes infrastructure and exploration within the world.

Divider

The interface is done simply through signs: using shift-left-click to set your start and end signs, then left click one sign to teleport to the other. Once you start pathing from the first sign, you must follow a player-made path to the other sign. If you deviate from that infrastructure, you will be stopped from charting any further and forced to backtrack.

The blocks that can be used for paths are non-naturally occurring wood, stone, and bricks (plus path blocks). This works with any sign, even modded ones! Supplementaries' signs are an especially good fit for this mod.

DividerFAQ (Title)

Why am I seeing 'path underdeveloped' on path blocks?

  • If you have used an earlier version of Via Romana in the past and have since updated, try deleting your config file and letting it regenerate.

What can I control with config?

  • The area of blocks checked around the player (the size of path needed).
  • Minimum and maximum distance between recorded nodes in the path (maximum is how far the player can deviate from the path).
  • Minimum and maximum distance for the entire path.
  • The required "quality" of infrastructure: the fraction of infrastructure blocks needed in the radius.
  • The forge block tags which will count as infrastructure blocks (in addition to our native path block tag).
  • Dimensions that the mod will allow pathing through (cross-dimension pathing is not allowed).
  • Entities that are allowed to teleport (including vehicles like boats or horses).

Why doesn't the link between signs go away when the path is broken?

  • We considered implementing this early on, but due to performance impacts of loading chunks and the lack of benefits to the feature, it was not. We understand that some players may expect this behaviour, but the addition of another method for griefers to use does not justify the major changes to the code required.

Which signs work?

  • Anything that has the word "sign".

Will this mod be available for version X?

Are there any planned features?

  • We have a few things in mind to add after initial release, as well as additional functionality with a mod yet to be released...

Can I use this in my modpack and/or server?

  • Yes, as long as it's downloaded from our official sources.

What's Rasa Novum?

  • We're a small group of mostly amateur developers making mods for our modpack and eventual server of the same name.
